Parental Involvement in the Troop Here is a video about volunteering with scouting. It's goofy but drives the point. Click here to see it. The Troop would not function without parent involvement. Here are some ways that you can help out: Assistant Scoutmaster: The Troop needs Assistant Scoutmasters in order to achieve all of the goals of the Troop. The Assistant Scoutmasters attend and help out with the running of weekly meetings, provide support to the patrols, help out with teaching skills to the Scouts, help transport scouts on trips and provide adult leader coverage at events. Every activity requires a minimum of 4 adults to attend. Our Troop has a busy schedule, and it is important to have enough adults available so that no one person is overly burdened with the Troop operations. There is a $10 registration fee to become an Assistant Scoutmaster. Research has shown that Scouts whose parents are registered leaders are more likely to stick with Scouting. Merit Badge Counselor: A Merit Badge councilor is a person who is registered with the Troop and can teach a Merit Badge skill. Let us know if you have a special skill that you would like to share. You can review all the merit badges offered at www.meritbadge.com or in the troop's library of merit badge booklets. Troop Committee Member: A Troop Committee member is part of a management team that handles upper level decisions effecting troop policy and finances. The Troop Committee consists of Chairperson, Assistant Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Advancement Chair, Campmaster and other members that help in the decisions that guide the Troop. Committee members also conduct Boards of Review with scouts who are ready to advance in rank and they review and approve Eagle Scout projects. This committee meets once every other month except in summer. There is a $10 registration fee to become a Troop Committee Member. Washington County Fair Booth: All Scouts and parents are required to work at least one 4 hour shift at our booth at the Washington County Fair in August. This is our only fundraising event, and it provides income to support many of our programs each year. Instead of multiple fundraisers selling cookies, candy, popcorn, etc. throughout the year, all we ask is for 4 hours, once a year. Many people find that it is actually pretty fun and the time goes by quickly. We also need people to help set up and organize the Fair Booth so that it is ready to run by fair time. |
