Equipment You are not expected to run out and spend hundreds of dollars on Scouting equipment. The only equipment your Scout will need right away besides Scout clothing is a sleeping bag, a mess kit with knife, fork and spoon, a flashlight or headlamp and a drinking cup for hot and cold liquids. All of these items can be purchased at a retail store or even second hand. The Troop provides all the tents, stoves and cooking utensils. If you are going to purchase any new equipment, make sure you research the proper gear for the activities your Scout will participate in. Our troop generally camps 3 times a year in cold-weather conditions. We have camped out in tents in -subfreezing weather, and we have camped in 90-degree summer heat. It would be better to find a deal on an inexpensive summer sleeping bag, and spend your money on a good cold weather mummy bag rated to zero or 10 above that is light weight and can be used for backpacking. If your Scout wishes to attend an event but does not have the proper gear, this is no reason for the scout to stay at home! Many members of the Troop have extra gear, and you may be able to borrow gear from someone. Some events require a certain age, rank or skill level. If we are going to climb a mountain or ski in the Great White North, your Scout may be required to prove his skill level, or in some cases a parent may be required to go along and be responsible for the Scout. |
