Scoutmaster's Message

February 1, 2012

Scouts and Parents,

The lack of snow so far this year has not stopped us from enjoying winter activities and it is good to see so many scouts taking advantage.  We have had tremendous attendance at the Snowsports/merit badge nights at Yawgoo Valley Ski Area on January 12, 19, and 26.  Many thanks to Mr. Swanson for coordinating Snowsports and teaching skiing.  The White Mountain Snowshoe Trip had 15 scouts and leaders who braved the extreme cold to enjoy the snow-covered peaks of New Hampshire on January 15-16.  Despite the cold conditions (wind chills were -30 degrees F) it was an incredible winter experience in the mountains.  Thanks to Mr. Gardell for coordinating as a lot goes into organizing this high adventure trip.  Nine scouts earned or worked on merit badges at the Merit Badge College at RI College in Providence on a snowy January 21.  Thanks to Mr. Pereira for representing the troop and guiding the scouts.  Twenty scouts and leaders Spent Saturday January 28 skiing and snowboarding at Okemo Mountain in Vermont.  Thanks to Mr. Gardell for organizing this trip.

Due to new Chariho School policies, RICHMOND SCHOOL DOORS WILL BE LOCKED AT ALL TIMES.  An adult leader will be at the door at the beginning of the meeting to let group participants inside.  If you come late and no one is at the door, KNOCK 6 TIMES loudly on the side door to the cafeteria (or back door to the gym on Activity nights) and we will let you in.

SCOUT MEETINGS WILL NOT BE HELD if Chariho schools are closed or let out early on any Tuesday because of the weather.

It is time once again to renew your commitment to scouting and REJOIN SCOUTS FOR THE YEAR by paying $15 per scout or leader in cash or check payable to Troop 1 Richmond.  Dues can be turned in at the meeting or mailed to John Hacunda, 135 Auburn Drive, Charlestown, RI 02813.  ALL MONEY IS DUE BY TUESDAY FEBRUARY 7.  PLEASE pay by the deadline so that we do not need to chase people down for payment!  If dues are not paid the membership will expire and you will have to reapply.  If you have questions call Mr. Hacunda at 364-6419.

There will be a PATROL LEADER COUNCIL MEETING (Class A uniform) just before the troop meeting on Tuesday, February 7, 6:00-6:30 PM at the Richmond School Library.  All Patrol Leaders, Senior Patrol Leader, and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader must attend.  Any Patrol Leader who cannot attend needs to contact his Assistant Patrol Leader so that each patrol is represented.

TROOP MEETINGS will take place on Tuesday February 7 and 14 at 6:30 PM in the Richmond School Cafeteria (Class A beige shirt).  Due February 7: $15 cash or check per scout and leader for annual recharter fee.  Due February 14: $40 cash or check for Cranmore Mountain Snowsports Weekend.

An ACTIVITY MEETING will take place on Tuesday February 28 in the Richmond School Gym (Class B T-shirt).

SNOWSPORTS AT YAWGOO VALLEY in Exeter continue Thursday nights February 2, 9, and 16.  Snowsports will only be held Thursday February 23 during public school vacation if there is enough interest.  Contact Mr. Swanson at 539-6709 for questions.  Snowsports will be held if Yawgoo Valley is open; check their website or call their SnoFone at 401-294-3802 ext 4 to confirm.

The KLONDIKE DERBY will take place from 6:30 PM Friday-4:45 PM Saturday February 3-4 at Camp Yawgoog in Hopkinton.  Scouts should dress warmly and arrive prepared for cold conditions.  Contact Mr. Santagata for questions at 539-0653.  More information and a packing list will be emailed separately.

Here are a few more events to look forward to:

CRANMORE MOUNTAIN SNOWSPORTS WEEKEND in North Conway New Hampshire gives scouts of all abilities the opportunity to enjoy a New Hampshire mountain. The OCEANOGRAPHY MERIT BADGE with Project Oceanology in Groton CT will take place on Saturday May 5.  Project Oceanology provides an outstanding introduction to oceanography providing a nice mix of classroom and hands-on experience. The opportunity to get on the water on a research vessel and do water sampling, benthic grabs, and trawls is a great educational experience.  We will meet at Richmond School at 8:00 AM and return at approximately 5:00 PM.  The merit badge runs from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Project Oceanology in Groton, CT and will include lab and beach studies plus an oceanographic cruise.  $25 fee in cash or check payable to Troop 1 Richmond is due at the April 10th Troop Meeting.  Fee includes all activities, supplies, and lunch.  This event will run rain or shine.  This Merit Badge day covers all but one (item number 8) of the Oceanography Merit Badge requirements.   If you have questions contact Mr. Hacunda at 364-6419.
